netbasiks.com Technical Support: Publishing Utilities

Uploading your site with Netscape Composer

This tutorial will guide you step-by-step through configuring Netscape Composer (included with Netscape Communicator software) to exchange files between your computer and your web site.

You can download Netscape FREE at http://home.netscape.com/browsers/index.html

In order to follow along with us, you'll need to have Netscape Composer installed, and you'll need to be connected to the internet via your Internet service provider. Communicator is part of a typical installation for Netscape.

To start Netscape Composer:

1) Click Windows Start button.
2) Click
Programs.
3) Click
Netscape Communicator.
4) Click
Netscape Composer.

Create a Simple Page

Before you can publish an html file to your web site, you must either have a page already created, or create a page. To Edit a file:

1) FTP the file to edit from the server to your PC.

2) To Open a file:

 Open Netscape Composer.
 Click
File --> Open.
Browse, find and select the file to edit.
 Click the
Open button.

3) Edit the file and make changes to the file. For further information about editing the file: http://www.valsvisions.com/html/composerintro.html

4)
Save the file.
This step is very important.

5) FTP the file to the server over the old file.

Publish Your Web Page.

1. From the menu bar, choose File --> Publish.

The Publish Files dialogue box will open, and will look similar to this:

2. Enter the following settings:

HTTP or FTP Location to publish to: ftp://yourdomain.com/www/
Username: Insert your username here.
Password: Insert your password here.

NOTE: If you wish to place the file in a sub-directory you must first create that directory with the file manager. Then the location would be ftp://yourdomain.com/www/subdirectory.

3. If you wish, you may choose to save your password so that you don't have to enter it each time you log in. If you wish to enable this time saving feature, check the box marked "Save Password"

4. Enter the Page Title at the top of the window, and also the Filename.

When you are finished entering these settings, click on the OK button, and you will be connected to your server. The Security Information box may open, if so, just click on continue, and your file will upload.
